Social Networking Sites (Facebook, My Space, YouTube, etc)
Everything that we
discuss in the general information about viruses and spyware applies here. Just because you and a million other people all use
these sites every day without issues, it doesn't mean there aren't problem
lurking there waiting to exploit your system.
This is especially so with the
explosive growth of such services. Everyone who is online knows someone who goes
to one or another of these every day. Most of the sites are very careful to try
and filter out any threats and for the most part do a good job. However nothing
is perfect and they have been used in the past to spread things like worms and trojans.
Can you protect yourself against these problems without simply
disconnecting from the 'net?
The answer is maybe. The first line of defence is
to use an up to date browser (browser security problems are legendary,
especially with some older versions). Use the latest antivirus and anti
spyware tools you can find and pay attention to what you are downloading. Its
not a definitive solution but it should afford some measure of protection.
