Viruses & Other Security Issues
So the question is "How do I
avoid getting viruses or worse? Or in simpler terms where do they come from in the first place?"
The follow up of course is "If I'm
unfortunate enough to get one (or more) what do I do about it?"
First things first- Here’s a fact that may chill you a little and put the need for protection
into perspective.
According to
Sophos (a leader in the anti malware
business) a brand new, unprotected system will likely become
infected with malicious software in 12 MINUTES. That’s hardly enough time to
even check your email, let alone look for the weather forecast and read the
latest headlines.
You can get a virus or other infection from a
multitude of sources. The most common way is in your email, but social
networking sites like Facebook, file sharing programmes (P2P) (Limewire,
Azereus (now Vuze), even your best friend or your Aunt Martha are all
potential threats (sorry Martha). In short if you are online, you are at
risk. Then there is the original method of distribution - in a file on
an innocent looking disk where it can lie dormant for years before it
gets activated again.
So what can you do about it? The first thing is
not get one in the first place. Next, use an antivirus and antispyware programme and keep them updated. Finally keep your eyes open and just
use common sense.
